Emerging from Riverside, CA, Arturo Ibarra's music project Palm Thieves blends Indie Rock, Post Punk, and Dream Pop. With his brother James on bass, Palm Thieves is set to continue to create music driven by passion and fun. Here's the story of Palm Thieves, enjoy!
Arturo Ibarra is the creative force behind Palm Thieves, a music project born out of Riverside's vibrant music scene. Launched in 2020, Palm Thieves started as a solo project, with Arturo crafting music for the sheer joy of it. With the help of Arturo’s brother, James Ibarra on bass and the rhythmic pulse of a drum machine, together they bring the project's distinctive sound alive. Arturo's guitar work and unique vocals help anchor the sound.
The Ibarra brothers' musical chemistry is rooted in their shared history in making music. Before Palm Thieves, they collaborated in several bands, including Bad Abstract, where they were able to master their performance and songwriting skills. Palm Thieves’ name was chosen for its catchy ring, inspired by the simplicity and directness of two-word band names that resonate with some of Arturo's favorite bands. With Palm Thieves, Arturo has been able to carve out a unique space, blending creativity with a passion for music that resonates with his audience.
Arturo crafts music that blends the atmospheric textures of Indie Rock, Post Punk, Dream Pop, Alternative and is greatly shaped by a wide array of musical references. The project's sound is also inspired by music of the 80s and 2010s. Some influences from the 80s include the gothic rock of The Cure, the noise-infused wall of sound of Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Latin American rock band Caifanes and Soda Stereo. More recent influences from the 2010s include Wild Nothing's ethereal dream pop, Human Tetris's dark synthscapes, Her's jangly indie pop, and Twin Shadow's genre-bending new wave sound. Fusing all these influences work together to add depth and complexity to Palm Thieves' music.
In the project's early days, original material was scarce, so the duo would often supplement their sets with covers, showcasing their versatility and range. As Palm Thieves continues to evolve, Arturo's original songwriting remains at the forefront, reflecting his unique artistic vision.
Palm Thieves is currently looking forward to releasing a new album towards the end of May. This upcoming release promises to further showcase his unique blend of sounds and styles. For now, Palm Thieves is focused on creating and sharing music, with the simple yet fulfilling goal of releasing new material more frequently and enjoying the creative process. With a passion for music driving the project, Palm Thieves is set to continue evolving and producing art that reflects Arturo's artistic vision.
